Play with everything!

Posted by sarah on December 18th, 2008

Happy holidays! Lunch Box will be shutting its lid for a month from now until mid January 2009. Thanks to all who’ve contributed comments, ideas and support in 2008.

I’ve really enjoyed blogging this year - it’s been a great discpline for me, professionally, to commit my ideas to screen. In November, Lunch Box had 773 visits from 582 visitors. On top of that, since mid September, 38 feeds have been picked up by readers. Visitors have been steadily increasing since I started in July. I plan to keep going next year, with an extended scope, now that my job is evolving to include e-learning research and innovation.

A few treats for the Christmas stocking, then. I’ve written on trends in education recently, so here’s some thoughts from the periphery …

First, this holidays I won’t be far away from Google Earth – some bright spark has created a mashup with surf forecasts, layering swell maps, wind direction, wave height and tides over Google Earth to help me track down that elusive wave.

I’m sure we’ll see many more mashups in 2009. Try Dipity’s timetube, which builds a timeline of videos scraped from across the web from your keywords. This has many uses – for example, tracking news stories and perspectives on current events.

Second, Sony Playstation has just launched the virtual world Home, which I’m picking will give Second Life a run for its money in 2009. The animation and rendering in Home are astonishing.

Future gazing

Posted by sarah on October 4th, 2008

It feels like a number of trends are converging at the moment. I’m reading a lot in the blogosphere about software as a service (applications delivered through your web browser), cloud computing (accessing IT infrastructure over the web) and the latest netbooks to appear on the market (wireless computers without hard drives).

The increasing popularity of web applications, distributed services, and portable, web-enabled devices signals that we are in the process of shifting away from our reliance on the single desktop computer with local storage to using multiple devices that let us access information, create and collaborate, and store our data ‘in the cloud’.

Magic and delight

Posted by sarah on September 27th, 2008

Some technology simply surprises and delights. I’ve posted about the web applications developed by 37signals before – their products give you what you need and nothing more. You never feel like you’re fighting the interface to make it work for you.

Quicksilver is another one. At first glance, Quicksilver simply lets you find applications and data on your computer or in the cloud. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognise which items you are searching for based on previous experience.

More than that, having found what you want, Quicksilver lets you choose what to do with it – email it, copy it, move it, launch it. You can send instant messages, dial a phone number, look up words in a dictionary and queue up songs in iTunes party shuffle without having to open an application and wrangle with its interface. You can resolve a simple task and get back to what you were doing without interruption.
